Description

This section discusses the laboratory health and safety (LH&S) program, which must address how to protect oneself from the hazards of working with biological, chemical, and radiological agents. Such a program is necessary for providing for the health and safety of the entire laboratory staff. As part of the quality system, all aspects of the LH&S program must be fully documented. Laboratory personnel must be trained. The LH&S program must be audited periodically and appropriate records must be kept to document performance, meet appropriate regulatory requirements, and document the status of the LH&S program. Topics covered include: safe laboratory practices (1090B); laboratory facility/fixed equipment (1090C); hazard evaluation (1090D); personal protective equipment (1090E); worker protection medical program (1090F); provisions for work with particularly hazardous substances (1090G); biological safety (1090H); radiological safety (1090I); and, chemical hygiene plan (1090J).
