The heterotrophic plate count (HPC), formerly known as the standard plate count, is a procedure for estimating the number of live heterotrophic bacteria in water and measuring changes during water treatment and distribution or in swimming pools. Three methods and four media are described. Section 9215A, the introduction, discusses general applications, selection of method, work area, samples, sample preparation, media, incubation, counting and recording, and computing and reporting counts. The pour plate method, the spread plate method, and the membrane filter methods are described in 9215B, 9215C, and 9215D, respectively. The 2004 version of 9215 contains a new multiwell plate enzyme substrate method.
