This section comprises dozens of illustrations of various types of aquatic plants and animals. Because these plates are not intended for critical identification, specific species names are not cited. For the convenience of those less familiar with the organisms referred to in preceding sections, a series of short keys is presented to enable them to identify most organisms at the level illustrated by the plates. Tips for identifying unknown organisms are offered. A key to major groups of aquatic organisms leads through a series of identifying tags to find the name of the organism. A list of common types of aquatic organisms by trophic level is provided along with an extensive list of selected taxonomic references.
