This introductory section gives the scope and application of methods included in Standard Methods. Methods presented apply generally to the examination of waters of a wide range of quality and for a number of purposes. The unity of the fields of water supply, receiving water quality, and wastewater treatment is recognized by presenting methods of analysis for each constituent in a single section for all types of waters. A general discussion of statistics as it applies to standard methods is given; a table gives critical values for 5% and 1% tests of discordancy for a single outlier in a normal sample. The 2011 version contains new information on least square curve fitting, an expanded glossary, and a section on dilution/concentration operations.
