Radiochemical analytical instruments operate on the principle that the energy expended by a radiation event is detected and recorded by an instrument suitable for the type of radiation emitted. The counting instruments described below are commonly found in radioanalytical laboratories. Other less common instruments may also be used for analysis. Instrument background and fractional counting efficiency must be measured and integrated into the sample calculations. These characteristics can be compared with historical data and used to evaluate instrument stability.
